A ripping yarn.
Australia sends 1.25 million mattresses to landfill every year and they are big and difficult to squash down, thanks to all those springs. But Mission Australia has found a way to recycle them, while also helping the long-term unemployed develop job skills. This social enterprise project, called Soft Landing, is based in the Illawarra region of New South Wales. According to operations manager Bill Dibley, they’re averaging 3,200 mattresses a week. That’s 166,400 mattresses a year not going to landfill.
The mattresses get ripped apart and practically everything is used. The steel goes to a local metal merchant. The latex and foam are made into carpet underlay and the wood gets turned into everything from chopping boards to toys.
The fabric, which is called ‘shoddy’ goes to a textiles company and any remaining textile scraps are turned into punching-bag filler in a separate part of the enterprise called Featherweight. Mission Australia has set up its own manufacturing plant and, with the help of an automated filling machine, produces 35,000 punching bags a year. In and Around the Academy

On Monday Night was were privileged to view a DVD of Braco. If you haven’t watched him or even heard of him, do go to Braco in America – YouTube – Braco Streaming Gaze Global. We live in amazing times and it is incredible to think that just by a person gazing at you in a crowd, you could be healed. In the video we heard people speak of the healings that they had experienced. One lady had had a brain tumor the size of a grapefruit, was in a wheelchair, was expected to die shortly when her friends paid for her to come to see Braco. They had a video of her sometime later dancing on her front lawn – completely well. Other people had brought photos with them of their sick friends or relations – a man brought a photo of his mother who had breast cancer in both breasts – soon after the gazing she went and had a scan and found that all signs of cancer gone.
I found that his stillness affected me, I felt I was looking at someone who carried the Christ energy. People said that they could see all this white or gold light around him while he was gazing. I would like to go to Perth and see him there on the 7th, 8th and 9th June. Cost $8 per session.
