Sound Event with Paulien Gort and Matthew James
The Academy of Light was blessed to have another evening of sound healing at Mosman Art Gallery with the earthy-angelic duo of Paulien Gort and Matthew James.
It was a beautiful blend of many instruments, from medicine drum and the didgeridoo (yidaki) to singing bowls, toning sounds and the gong.
All of us gathered in circle for a grounding meditation and commenced the journey lying down head first facing into the centre of the sound circle. I was very soon awash with a deep sense of peace and bliss as we were tuned in with Paulien’s singing. It didn’t take long to soon feel as though I was entering a deep meditative space – so grounded, very much of this world – yet out in the cosmic ethers simultaneously.
My mind switched off and I could feel myself and others journeying into a deep theta brainwave space. In reality it felt like a sense of losing focus on what my mind was busy trying to figure out; “what instrument is this?” … “Wow, that sounded so close, should I open my eyes to see what that was?” and instead just gave over to allow the sound current to do what it so seamlessly does. And so effortlessly weaves together, pieces of ourselves put back together again.
I knew I wasn’t the only person to experience a deep space like this as I could see others move so deliberately and blissfully rolling up their blankets and yoga mats.
Paulien Gort is a professional Sound Healer who offers one-on-one Sound Healing sessions and who offers regular Sacred Toning Sound Baths in North Narrabeen and Sydney area. She also incorporates sound in her Family Constellation workshops.

Nancy Valentine Smith is a Medicine Woman, a Shaman, an Alchemist, a Healer and Sacred Technician. She comes from a lineage of Medicine men and women who were also Seers.
