GARLIC – A NATURAL ANTIBIOTIC
Garlic has been used as both food and medicine in many cultures for thousands of years, dating at least as far back as the time that the Giza pyramids were built. Garlic is still grown in Egypt, but the Syrian variety is the kind most esteemed now.
Garlic is mentioned in the Bible and the Talmud. Hippocrates, Galen, Pliny the Elder, and Dioscorides all mention the use of garlic for many conditions, including parasites, respiratory problems, poor digestion, and low energy. Its use in China was first mentioned in A.D. 510.
It was consumed by ancient Greek and Roman soldiers, sailors, and rural classes and, according to Pliny the Elder by the African peasantry. Galen eulogizes it as the “rustic’s theriac”, and Alexander Neckam, a writer of the 12th century recommends it as a palliative for the heat of the sun in field labor.
In the account of Korea’s establishment as a nation, gods were said to have given mortal women with bear and tiger temperaments an immortal’s black garlic before mating with them. This is a genetically unique six-clove garlic that was to have given the women supernatural powers and immortality
Garlic cloves are used as a remedy for infections (especially chest problems), digestive disorders, and fungal infections such as thrush.
Garlic has been found to enhance thiamin absorption and therefore reduce the likelihood for developing the thiamin deficiency beriberi.
In 1924, it was found that garlic is an effective way to prevent scurvy, because of its high vitamin C content.
Garlic has been used reasonably successfully in AIDS patients to treat cryptosporidium in an uncontrolled study in China. It has also been used by at least one AIDS patient to treat toxoplasmosis, another protozoal disease.
Garlic supplementation in rats, along with a high protein diet, has been shown to boost testosterone levels.
A 2010 double-blind, parallel, randomised, placebo-controlled trial involving 50 patients whose routine clinical records in general practice documented treated but uncontrolled hypertension. Concluded that “Our trial suggests that aged garlic extract is superior to placebo in lowering systolic blood pressure similarly to current first line medications in patients with treated but uncontrolled hypertension.” from Wikepedia

In and Around The Academy

Sad news came to us, Easter Sunday 24th April, 2011, of the passing of Sai Baba.
Emails came from The Academy community all over the world telling us of the sad news and what it meant to each individual and what the world is saying about it.
We all know that Sai Baba will still be with us, guiding us through the transitional time, but his physical presence will be sadly missed.
It came as a shock to hear that Marie-Paule Goudon who lived in Puttaparti in Sai Baba’s community, was killed in a whilst riding her motor scooter on Easter Monday. 
She was known in the village as the Ganesh Lady as she had a wonderful statue of Lord Ganesh in her garden where the local people used to come and pray. Marie-Paule was renowned for helping the less fortunate, sick and dying and was kindness itself to them. May she rest in peace with her beloved Lord Sai Baba.

Rosemary’s next Universal Awareness/Communicating with your Higher Self course will commence on 11th May and going through to 29th June. The focus of this term will be what is stopping the heart opening and clearing the pain from old wounds. As we cannot go to the next level of consciousness while there is pain and attachment to past happenings in the heart, it is now time that all these thoughts are cleared and we can really love ourselves fully. JACARANDA HAVEN.
Well what a busy time we had over Easter at Jacaranda Haven, building the Labyrinth and planting the Lavender bushes in it. Our guests Irene Mouritz and Michael Foley from Brisbane also worked very hard. But we had lots of laughs and much fun. The next 150 or so plants needed to finish the Labyrinth are still too small to transplant so John decided to only do every third space so it may look a little sparse until the others are added. Remember Rosie Keller,a disciple of Sri Jayanara, came and together we buried blessed rose petals, rice and a large clear quartz terminator crystal at the Labyrinth’s entrance so those who stand there will be blessed at the start of their walk.
Those people that come on the Open Day on the 21st May will be able to walk the Labyrinth.
