HEALTH TIP – “Magnesium is the Conduit for Light in the Body”
Magnesium is the most important mineral to life – the Master Mineral – and has about 350 different functions in the body, which is more than any other nutrient. It is also a co-factor to enhance the performance of many other nutrients. Magnesium has 12 protons, 12 neutrons and 12 electrons. It’s atomic number is ’12’. Magnesium is the centre of the chlorophyll molecule in plants. Chlorophyll is what makes plants green and it is used by plants to convert full spectrum sunlight into carbohydrate energy that we consume.
Inside the body magnesium continues to take this light and move it through to our cells via metabolism, as magnesium chloride is used to make hydrochloric acid (stomach acid), and is responsible for insulin and blood sugar regulation. Magnesium also supports enzyme activity to drive energy production in the cell (adenosine triphosphate – ATP). Magnesium helps the blood to flow more fluidly by helping to deliver a negative charge to the blood platelets so they bounce off one another and have more surface area to absorb oxygen and nutrients (rather than a positive charge which makes them clump together). This gives magnesium a natural anti-inflammatory property, which helps normalise blood pressure. It also helps to control free floating calcium to prevent it from settling in the soft tissue and joints. Magnesium joins with calcium, the union then moving into the bones to build strong bones. Magnesium is also essential in the repair of DNA links.
Magnesium is ‘spent’ under stress. It is the ‘relaxing’ mineral that the body uses to counteract the muscle tightening effects of adrenaline and stress, and so is used as a currency in the body. This is why excessive chronic stress over time leads to ‘burn-out’ or premature ageing. If we don’t put back into our magnesium ‘bank account’ what we lose under stress, the deficit grows over time and our body finds it more and more difficult to perform its functions properly – such as detoxing and elimination of wastes, the repair of tissue and the production of energy. Literally, our body cannot support the life/light force without the action of magnesium in the body.
Foods have become magnesium deficient because our soils are deficient, and chemical farming practices don’t put sufficient minerals in the soils that plants, animals and humans need for optimal health. Magnesium compound tablets and powders are hard to digest and absorb via the gut wall. Most people are lucky if they even get 20% of the magnesium ions in oral supplements making it through to the tissue cells where it is used.
The best way to absorb larger quantities of magnesium is via the skin using magnesium chloride sea salts, ie. magnesium chloride hexahydrate (food grade). These are white flakes from naturally dehydrated sea water, with the sodium chloride part of the raw sea salt removed. What is left of the raw sea salts comprises magnesium chloride (48%), other sea minerals and trace elements (2%), with the other 50% of the flakes being water molecules in crystalised form. The flakes can be used in many ways, including as a water additive to re-mineralise and alkalise filtered, distilled or rain water, to make a mouth wash, or to soak feet or bath in.
Elektra Life package in Australia a magnesium chloride salt which comes from 3,200m above sea level in the Tibetan Plateau, which local laboratory testing shows has no mercury (which would be the case in open ocean waters these days). These salts also have a higher magnesium ion level (15.5%) compared to open ocean waters (usually around 12%). Magnesium is used by the body on a daily basis and needs to be supplied daily. Like water, we can’t consume on Monday with nothing for the rest of the week. Using a variety of different methods of transdermal application ensures that you get a regular supply.
For instance, Elektra Magnesium Cream is a high quality anti-ageing moisturiser and skin conditioner made from natural butters and oils with magnesium chloride salts infused (15%), and can be used all over the body, even on face and under arms as a deodorant. Elektra Magnesium Oil Spritz is a high concentration water-based magnesium solution that can be applied to areas of discomfort, pain, swelling, muscle cramping etc. It combines well with the magnesium cream too. Magnesium has a natural stimulating effect on the nerve endings as it is passing into the epidermis and can feel a little bity or itchy temporarily until fully absorbed. The more sensitive and dry the skin the more the sensation is felt. Good skin hydration will counteract this and make absorption more soothing. This can be achieved via hot water soaking or via the natural oils of the moisturising cream.
Note, it is not advisable to use magnesium in conjunction with synthetic products such as petrochemical derivative creams (vaseline, sorbolene etc), as these create a skin barrier and block the pores.
You cannot overdose with transdermal magnesium application because the skin is a selective membrane and when it reaches its equilibrium it stops absorption at that time. The body won’t take up excess. Because we don’t know exactly how much we need as individuals from day to day, it’s best to experiment with different application rates and combination of magnesium products until the desired effects are achieved. Listen to the body’s feedback and it will guide you.
