Maggie Hamiltion – Reconnecting to the Magical World of Fairies
Maggie Hamilton enchanted her audience at the Academy of Light with experiences of the realm of fairies and nature spirits.
Sydney-based author and social researcher, Maggie has been fascinated by fairies since she was a child growing up in the English countryside.
Fairy tales were originally part of a rich oral tradition passed down from one generation to the next -usually by the women folk.
The German philosopher Joseph Herder encouraged people to collect the folk tales and songs, which he saw as the heart of a people. The Grimm brothers were one of the first to gather the stories – publishing them as a collection in 1812. Since then, Grimm’s Fairy Tales expanded. Many other writers and artists were inspired to collect these precious fragments from the past, including WB Yeats and Thomas Keightley. Later, the Fairy Investigation Society was formed in London in the 1920s to investigate these beings scientifically. Members included Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Walt Disney.
Fairy tales have captured the imagination of children for thousands of years. Children perceive these beings as real. Yet, as we grow older, we lose our capacity to see them because we are told they are part of our imagination.
Fairies do not vibrate at the same frequency or exist in the same dimension as we do – so they are not generally visible as physical bodies. Yet that does not mean they’re not right there with us. These living intelligences of nature are ever-present and can be accessed by anybody who wants to connect to them – through the beauty of the moment, through senses other than sight. We know when we’ve accessed the heightened vibrations of the fairy realm, as we experience a quiet ecstasy and often details in our immediate surroundings seem hyper-real – more lovely, more colourful, more scented than normal -bringing with them healing, wisdom and connection to all that is.
Maggie says that if we want to enter the realm of fairies, we need to get back to nature. “The fairy world speaks to us through every ‘aha’ moment we have in nature – a magical sunset, colourful autumn leaves, sparkling spring water.”
“Find your sacred places in nature – a special tree, a garden, or any holy place that enables you to become whole again. Drink in the colours, smells and textures that make you feel alive – lifting you into a quantum field – the eternal now.”
“Trees are a good place to start connecting with the elemental spirits. Run your fingers lovingly around the trunk. Notice the dance of the trees.”
“Rocks, like trees are wisdom keepers – so treat them with respect. See the sacredness in drops of rain or puddles. Listen to the birdsong at the beginning of day and at dusk.”
Maggie explained that by sensitising ourselves to the natural world, we also allow the spirit of land to speak to us. Fairies might not be seen, but every ecstatic moment in nature allows us to experience the healing gifts of the fairy realm.

Australia’s Last Chance High School
Mark Morrison is the principal of Macleay Vocational College in Kemsey a school locally known as a “muck up school” a place for seemingly hopeless cases.
